"The way to get started is to quit talking and begin doing." -Walt Disney
Welcome to my Disney College Program (DCP) Blog. This is my second blog for the DCP as well as my second experiance being apart of the program. I have accepted a position for my second round of the program in merchandise and am still awaiting an offer from the Disney Casting Directors for a position as a character performer. This first post will be mainly about my audition process. (For information about DCP interviews and applications please follow this link (keepcalmanddisneyon.blogspot.com))
Tuesday,March 8th, 2016 I took a leap of faith and stepped foot into a ballet studio hosting an audition for character performers for the Disney College Program Fall season. I had always wanted to go to an audition but never had the courage to do so. Seeing as I have about a year left of college I knew that this audition was a now or never situation. I mustered up every ounce of faith, trust, and pixie dust that I could and I am so grateful that I did.
The fist step of this audition was a small parade march. We did 8 counts of animation where we pretended like we were on a float waving and interacting with guest and then we did two 8 counts of a march. The song was " Hawaiian Roller Coaster Ride" from "Lilo and Stich". I liked that our first song was a familiar Disney song as it helped (me at least) with comfortably. After preforming this tid-bit before the directors, cuts were made. Out of the about 120 that were auditioning they kept around 30.
I was lucky enough to have made it past the first cut and to be honest I was a bit astonished that I did. I can say with a certainty that I am not as skilled of a dancer as a lot of the others auditioning. This just goes to show that you really never know what they are looking for. Never be intimidated by theatre or dance majors and never compare your weaknesses to someone else's strengths, You may be exactly what these directors are looking for! Confidence is key!
The second step was simply filling out paper work. The papers were a great chance to take a quick water break and breathe. With this paper work the casting directors took a headshot of their own and took some measurements to better match us with the characters we could be friends with. I enjoyed the break and it was a great chance to show personality as you communicate with the directors.
Lastly, the final part of the audition was a bigger and much more complicated dance number. I was so lost the entire time but I kept a smile and I really think that it helped me to better present myself to the directors. This was to an unfamiliar non Disney song and I think that it made it just a little harder for me as I didn't have something to mentally hold on to for cues. Alongside this dance number we also did another two 8 counts of animation! This was really fun and probably my favorite part of the entire audition. With these counts we were toy makers creating a toy and then we became the toy! I really loved the animation process because it was the only thing that I felt decently confident in. I was at the audition for about 4 hours and honestly this was the whole extent of the audition process! It really wasn't anything that the common dreamer couldn't do!
All in all this audition was a great time and a wonderful way to make friends who love the same things you do! I made so many great friends and a wondrous memory. I am so glad that I can say I auditioned for Disney and got off my tush and did the work to make my dreams come true! I hope that April comes quickly and I can find out the results of this audition! Good luck to all those getting ready to audition for their dream! You can do it!! DREAMS DO COME TRUE!
